On 8 May 2017, EU Commissioner Karmenu Vella presented awards to three EMAS organisations for their initiatives for particularly resource-conserving and efficient management under the motto “For a strong European circular economy”. The Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (HNEE) won for Germany in the Public Administration category and Wiegel Verwaltung GmbH & Co KG received an honourable mention for its commitment.

The 11th EMAS Awards ceremony took place in Valletta, Malta. Under the motto “For a strong European circular economy”, the European environmental award recognises measures by EMAS-registered companies and organisations that make a particular contribution to a circular economy, have a positive impact on the phases of the life cycle and are economically and socially relevant.

The German applicants for the EMAS Award 2017 will be invited to an expert discussion at the Federal Ministry for the Environment in Berlin at the end of the year and honoured with a certificate of participation.

The EMAS Award is the most prestigious award for environmental management. The European Commission recognises EMAS organisations that demonstrate outstanding environmental performance. Since 2005, the best environmental performance in different areas has been honoured, so that the European Environmental Award focuses on a different specific EMAS environmental topic each time. The awards are exclusively for organisations from all sectors of industry, services or the public sector with a valid EMAS registration.
